Georgia is ranked #2 in the signing category for the 2023 recruiting cycle. Top targets to watch include Dossie Robinson, Walker Lyons, Jamal Meriwether and Ellis Robinson.
Live Georgian football updates on National Signing Day 2023
Update 1:10 p.m.: An SEC rival in Georgia got a big boost on National Signing Day as 5-Star prospect Nichols Harbor announced his commitment to the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Harbor is one of the best athletes in the country and a legitimate track star. He can be either a rusher or a next-level tight end, as he’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 225 lbs. It’s Shane Beamer’s first 5-star commitment since becoming the head coach at South Carolina.
The Gamecocks now have a #16 recruiting class for the 2023 tournament according to On3 Consensus rankings. Georgia beat South Carolina in each of Beamer’s first two seasons, but the Gamecocks clearly made strides under Beamer. South Carolina finished the season with wins over Tennessee and Clemson.
12:30 p.m. Update: Georgia didn’t end up landing one of their tight end goals, however, as the Walker Lions announced they would stick with USC.
This comes as a mild inconvenience, as Georgia and Utah were seen as the favorites to land Lyons on National Signing Day.
Lyons will not play college football this coming season, as he will be involved with a Mormon mission.
The Lions were one of four Georgia targets to watch on Wednesday’s National Signing Day low. Duce Robinson, the nation’s highest end prospect, deserves a follow-up even though he’s thought he won’t sign on Wednesday. He’s also considering USC, along with Major League Baseball as a possibility.
Even without Lyon’s commitment to Georgia, it speaks to the job Georgia has done with tight ends in recent years that Lyon would have considered Georgia after signing Pierce Spurlin and Lawson Lucky in the early signing spell.
“I think the way we use it at Georgia definitely helps,” tight ends coach Todd Hartley told DawgNation before winning the national championship over TCU. “Coach Monken has done an incredible job of being unique and creative with how we use the tight ends and the staff we use. The kids see that and appreciate it.
“The second thing is, the University of Georgia is the best school in the country. From academics to social life to athletics, you won’t find a better institution. I believe in that very strongly.”
Georgia still does not have a signed letter of intent from offensive tackle Jamal Meriweather. The Bulldogs will learn what 5-star Ellis Robinson is up to on Wednesday, but he’s the #1 linebacker in the 2024 recruiting class.
