A man has been arrested in Egypt for stealing a phone from a journalist. The man allegedly snatched the phone from his hand and escaped when the journalist made a live broadcast. However, the thief inadvertently showed his face to the audience, causing him to be arrested by the police.
According to the British news website The Guardian, Egyptian correspondent Mahmoud Raqeb reports directly from the road after the Cairo earthquake. Then a man on a motorcycle dropped his hand and picked up the phone. However, the phone’s camera worked, so inadvertently the thief’s face also came up on Facebook.
When Mahmoud reported live on Facebook, his phone was snatched from his hands. During this time, more than 20,000 people were watching him.

The Guardian quoted Egyptian news website Youm7 as saying that the interior ministry had used “modern technology” to identify the suspected thief after the incident. According to the report, the man was arrested within hours of his home and taken to the police station, where he pleaded guilty during interrogation.
The video of the whole incident went viral on social media, showing the thief smoking a cigarette. One video also went viral on social media, which has been viewed more than 60 million times so far.
According to local media reports, the incident took place in Super Al Khaimah, Egypt’s fourth largest city. Egypt’s interior ministry has issued a statement saying the man was “unemployed” and sold the stolen phone.
