Ukraine crisis: India again abstains from voting at UNSC to convene special emergency session on Ukraine crisis, UAE and China abstain from voting discussed at UNGA

New Delhi: India has again abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly to convene a special emergency meeting on the Ukraine crisis. The United Arab Emirates and China also abstained. However, with 11 votes, it was decided to refer the matter to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). For the first time since 1982, the UNSC has referred the matter to the UNGA for a special emergency session. The crisis in Ukraine will now be discussed at an emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly. Interestingly, only 10 sessions of the General Assembly have been convened since 1950.

DS Thirumurthy, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, told a UNSC meeting on Ukraine: “We reiterate our call for an immediate end to violence and hostility.” Our Prime Minister has emphasized this in his recent talks with the Russian Federation and the leadership of Ukraine.

He said he welcomed the announcement by both sides today to hold talks on the Belarusian border. We are deeply concerned about the safety and security of Indian citizens, including many Indian students who are still stranded in Ukraine. The complex and dangerous situation on the border makes it difficult for us to expel Indians from Ukraine. Considering all the circumstances, we have decided to abstain from voting on the Ukraine issue.

Russia openly praised India’s position on the Ukraine issue at the UNSC, do you know what it said?
At the UNSC, the United States said – we will vote for a resolution holding Russia accountable for unforgivable actions and violations. Here we are talking, rockets are constantly raining all over Ukraine, and that too for an unnecessary attack fabricated by lies. Russia is spreading false propaganda about Ukraine’s behavior. This morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin sharpened Russia’s nuclear forces. There is no threat from NATO when it strikes a country that does not have nuclear weapons.
